Decided to get another release of Moosak out the door ... I've implemented a couple more wishlist items, though seeking is still lacking, and the playlist sort functionality is only half complete.

Still, it plays music, and it's fun stuff. Download, play, comment, whatever.

I've been hacking pretty much nonstop on Moosak the past few days. Moosak is now approaching the set of features I was looking for in a media player panel applet when I started this whole deal. These features include :

  • Ability to transparently play mp3, ogg, wav, and flac files. (I haven't actually tried the last two, but I have faith in GStreamer.)

  • Ability to play CD tracks.

  • A fully featured, clean, powerful playlist editor, which itself features lots of goodies :

+ Adding, removing, moving, and shuffling tracks.
+ Adding tracks based on past play history. This includes popular
(often-played) tracks, and tracks played at certain times of the day.
This feature might be expanded in the future to a more complex dialog, but
only if the interface stays simple.
+ Loading and saving playlists in a clean way (i.e. not involving a
    GtkFileSelection dialog).

That said, there are still a few key features Moosak lacks. These include :

  • Seeking ! Coming up in the next alpha release.

  • Metadata editing integrated in the playlist. This will be an extremely powerful feature but will take some significant hacking effort before it comes to fruition.

  • Adding the popup menu to the playlist removed the sorting and playback abilities that were present in the previous release. I'm going to work on getting those back in the playlist, but for now the Moosak control panel still works.

  • Final polishes include keyboard bindings and gettext translations. I'll need lots of help for that last one !

Finally, let me reiterate that Moosak is kind of a pain to set up and install at this point, mostly due to its heavily reliance on the CVS versions of various libraries.

I'm going to go ahead and release an initial alpha of Moosak, just to get the ball rolling. The installation process is a pain, the interface isn't complete yet, and, yes, we still get seg faults. But I'm releasing early and often on this project, dag nabbit.
